Section 272B of the Income-tax Act provides that any taxpayer who fails to comply with the provisions of PAN shall, in principle, be liable to a penalty of Rs. 10,000. Non-acquisition of a PAN where it is required, giving the prescribed documents an incorrect PAN deliberately, or giving an incorrect PAN to the person deducting or collecting tax.


As per the provisions of the Income-tax Act, no individual shall, however, have more than one PAN. If a person does have more than one PAN, he/she shall inform the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer regarding the same and request the second PAN to be rendered inactive or deleted.
